According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple remains on track to launch an M5-powered Mac Studio later this year, but a major overhaul is set to come in 2028. Here’s what we know.

Apple is set to release an updated Mac Studio sometime this fall, but according to Gurman, this will primarily be a chip upgrade to align it with the current lineup of M5-enabled Macs and iPad Pros. The current Mac Studio was released in early 2025 and comes with either an M4 Max or M3 Ultra chip, which are still more than capable machines.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman states that Apple is currently developing an M7 Ultra chip, intended for the 2028 refresh of the Mac Studio.

“I’m told Apple has also been working on internal changes to the high-powered desktop, including a better heat sink to improve thermal performance as the machine takes on more demanding on-device AI workloads. I’m not expecting a major redesign, at least not with the M5 Ultra model. And Apple has never been in much of a rush to overhaul its desktop designs: The last Mac Pro design stuck around for six years before the machine was discontinued, while the Mac mini recently went 15 years between major redesigns.” -Mark Gurman

Current market conditions, memory shortages, and Apple recently raising the prices on its devices could push the release of the more powerful machine further since the M5 model was expected this year around WWDC. Gurman mentions that Apple’s current chip strategy is “launching a base M6 this year, then moving on to the M7, M7 Pro, M7 Max and M7 Ultra.”
