It has been highly rumored that Apple is currently working on a second-generation iPhone Air, one that will remediate some of the shortcomings of the original model. According to a research note with GF Securities today, analyst Jeff Pu claims that Apple is planning to update the iPhone Air in the first quarter of 2027 alongside the updated iPhone 18e and iPhone 18 models. While this rumored timeframe has been backed by previous rumors, Jeff Pu’s report adds one small detail that would follow suit with the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models.

The Dynamic Island was first introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro models, and it became standard on flagship iPhone models (standard and Pro models, and not including the “e” series). The iPhone 18 Pro has been rumored to feature a smaller Dynamic Island, so Jeff Pu indicates that the next iPhone Air will receive the same treatment.

In addition, the iPhone Air 2 is expected to feature the following features:

  • An additional 48-megapixel ultra-wide rear camera (the current iPhone Air has only the main wide sensor on the back side).
  • The next-generation A20 Pro chip, which, for the first time, will be built on the cutting-edge 2nm process for better performance and efficiency. The A20 Pro chip on the next iPhone Air may be binned unlike the one on the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models.
  • The N2 wireless networking chip, which will improve upon the current iPhone Air’s N1 chip that consolidates Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Threads.
  • The next generation C2 cellular modem, which should improve overall speeds when connecting to cellular networks over the current iPhone Air’s C1X modem.

Jeff Pu expects the next iPhone Air to retain the same 6.5-inch display, 12GB of RAM, and the 18-megapixel Center Stage (selfie) camera.

On a related note, Jeff Pu also claims that the next iPhone 18e will feature 9GB of RAM, up from the 8GB of RAM on the iPhone 17e. This rumor is already backed by Ming-Chi Kuo.

This September, we expect Apple to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro models and the anticipated “iPhone Ultra” foldable, followed by a spring 2027 launch of the iPhone 18e, iPhone 18, and iPhone Air 2 as part of Apple’s new strategy to stagger its iPhone launches.
