This morning, Apple surprised us all by introducing both the M6 chip and the M5 Ultra chips earlier than we expected. This means the Mac mini is now updated with both the M6 and the M5 Pro chips, and the Mac Studio is now updated with both the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. However, there is one small thing that Apple made that is related to the Mac. If you go to the Accessories page, you’ll see that Apple has also updated all of its Magic Keyboard accessories for Mac with one subtle change. This applies to these models:
- Magic Keyboard (with Lock Key),
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, and
- Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad and Touch ID.
If you look very closely, you’ll see that the keyboard layout (at least in the United States) now matches that on all the MacBooks that were announced earlier this year, including the:
- MacBook Neo
- MacBook Air (M5)
- MacBook Pro (M5 Pro / M5 Max)
In other words, Apple did away with the words on the side keys such as Tab, Caps Lock, Shift, etc., in favor of the symbols that we are all accustomed to.
This is a very nice touch that provides consistency between Apple’s laptops and its own keyboard accessories, and we can expect the updated keyboards to come included with the M6 iMac that is expected to launch later in October.
