A few months ago, we reported that Volvo Cars was planning to bring CarPlay support to most of its vehicles built from 2020 onward, specifically highlighting that the EX60, EX90, and ES90 vehicles equipped with the Bowers & Wilkins audio system will gain Dolby Atmos with Spatial Audio. On Wednesday, Volvo confirmed the rollout of the upgrade and provided new details about Spatial Audio support. Here’s what you need to know.
In January, Volvo Cars stated they will support Apple CarPlay after General Motors had made the decision to phase out CarPlay and Android Auto, opting for an in-house solution to “simplify the tech stack, move away from third-party phone projection, and deliver a more integrated in-car experience.”
In July, we reported that more than 20 million Volvo models built from 2020 onward would be receiving an over-the-air update with CarPlay support. At that time, Volvo also confirmed Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio support for the all-new EX60, as well as the flagship EX90 and ES90 vehicles. Today, Volvo Cars shared more details about the system.

In a press release, Volvo Cars shared, “The latest software update also brings Spatial Audio support in CarPlay to the Volvo EX90 with Dolby Atmos technology. Enabled by the Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system, including 25 high-performance speakers, Volvo drivers can enjoy a multi-dimensional and immersive sound experience that places music and vocals around the cabin.” Further adding, “From a favourite track to a live performance or a podcast, Spatial Audio powered by Dolby Atmos adds depth and detail to everything you listen to – making every drive feel richer, more engaging and more enjoyable.”
Volvo Cars further clarifies that “Spatial Audio in CarPlay requires a Bowers & Wilkins sound system to deliver a fully immersive experience, which is available to choose when ordering the Volvo EX60, EX90 and ES90.”
Volvo says that customers can still redeem the three-month offer in the Volvo app, and it will be available until July 6th, 2027. Apple recently announced price increases for Apple Music. In the United States, here are the Apple Music plans that are affected by the price hikes:
