This helps in determining the distance by measuring the amount of time it takes light to reach an object and reflect back much like the Sonar (Sound Navigation and Ranging) used by Ships and submarines to determine distance using Sound waves. This new LiDAR sensor uses time-of-flight to measure reflected light from a maximum of 5 meters away which includes both indoors and outdoors. This new LiDAR sensor works at a Photon level which works in speeds as low as nanoseconds. Apple says that this sensor opens up possibilities for Augmented Reality. Apple is working on a new AR app codenamed ‘Gobi’ according to the codes found in iOS 14 obtained by 9To5Mac. Read our article about iOS 14 here.
