Hy-Vee, the popular midwestern grocery store chain, has started to slowly roll out contactless/near field communication readers (NFC) at its gas pumps.
A Hy-Vee gas station in Omaha, NE, has been found to be one of the first locations to get the NFC readers at the pump, according to @Yartctls on Twitter.

In the source’s experience, the NFC reader at the pump was not working when he was examining it. However, the fact that it is there, it could be a sign of good things to come for both Apple Pay and Apple Card users.
The way how you know if the NFC reader is working at a pump is if the green light is on and does not blink every 10 seconds.
Hy-Vee began accepting Apple Pay in its retail stores in 2018. Last year, its gas stations did suffer from a data breach, as well as other aspects of its business as well.
Having NFC readers at the pump could be a way for the company to avoid having issues such as dealing with hacks and card skimmers, as well as provide a more secure way for customers to pay for their gas when going into the gas station is not an option.
