At the end of October, Apple officially launched a repair program for faulty AirPods Pro models built before October 2020. Here’s how you can check if your AirPods Pro are eligible for this service replacement program.

Apple has determined that a “small percentage” of AirPods Pro models built prior to October 2020, may be faulty and experience sound issues. The new repair program, called “AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues,” is designed to repair or replace either the left, right, or both affected earphones.

Apple says that affected AirPods Pro models may exhibit these issues:

  • Crackling or static sounds that increase in loud environments, with exercise, or while talking on the phone
  • Active Noise Cancellation not working as expected, such as a loss of bass sound, or an increase in background sounds, such as street or airplane noise

Apple also mentions that AirPods Pro cases are not affected, therefore will not be replaced. They also mention that regular AirPods aren’t covered by this program.

Although the program says faulty models were built prior to October 2020, they still require a serial number check. The program covers models both in-and-out of warranty, for up to two years. Replacement earphones will not receive an extended warranty.

For customers who are affected by faulty AirPods Pro, Apple has laid out steps you can take to get them repaired or replaced:

Your AirPods Pro will be examined prior to any service to verify that they are eligible for this program. AirPods Pro (left, right or both) with a confirmed issue will be replaced,” says Apple.
