According to sources from DigiTimes, Apple is collaborating with Samsung and LG Display to produce the more energy-efficient LTPS OLED displays for the next iPhones. Reports expect the higher-end Pro models will feature this next generation of displays. These displays will allow those iPhone models to finally have a maximum variable refresh rate of 120.

At WWDC 2017, Apple debuted both the 10.5″ and 12.9″ iPad Pro with ProMotion displays. These displays dynamically adjust the refresh rate based on certain scenarios. For example, the display is set to 24Hz when the screen is idle, and to 120Hz when the user scrolls a web page or plays a game. While the iPad Pro has this feature for over three years, at the same time, other smartphone competitors have 120Hz displays. Apple usually wants to make the best experience possible instead being first, so it’s time for Apple to make the upgrade.

Thanks to the newer displays, DigiTimes expects the Pro models to feature 15-20% reduced power consumption. Other features coming to the “iPhone 13” lineup include an A15 chip, advanced cameras, and always-on displays.
