Opinion: Why I will soon be forgoing my subscription to CARROT Weather

Since my late college days, I have relied on one particular weather app to keep me informed about my local weather, as opposed to nearby TV stations. However, those days look like they are coming to an end.

With Apple acquiring the Dark Sky weather app last year and then integrating it into its Weather app in the upcoming iOS 15 release, I feel like there is not much of a point for me to keep having my CARROT Weather subscription. I’ve been using the Tier 3 subscription for $24.99 a month.

For the record, I have used every single version of the app. This includes the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac and even the Apple TV app that seems as though it has not been updated in ages.

Honestly, I’m kind of surprised there was never a CarPlay version of the app that would let you view your current weather conditions, as well as see a radar. Then again, that could make for some unnecessary distracted driving.

Over the years, this app has brought me a lot of joy. The humor in it is constantly being updated and the notifications for weather have been borderline pinpoint accurate. You could not ask for a better premium weather app. I trust it more than local TV meteorologists too.

However, even with all of that, if I can get all or most of those features for free, I’ll probably want to go that route.

With the new Apple Weather app, I’ll get similar alerts of when there is about to be precipitation in my area and access to a good radar. Oh, and there is a widget available for it too, obviously.

The only feature I have not seen from any of the iOS 15 betas is one where it tells you when you’re in a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning. I’m sure that throughout the months of the new Weather app being released and available to the general public that the feature will eventually be added to it.

You might be wondering if there is a way to get me to go back to CARROT Weather?

Indeed there is.

If the new Weather app is not updated and working to my satisfaction after a few weeks or months of usage, I will consider going back to CARROT Weather.

In the meantime, when the new Weather app is released, I’ll admit that it will be a change for me, especially the Apple Watch app and not having a macOS version of the Weather app on my MacBook Pro. But at the end of the day, I think it could be a change for the best for me at this time.

And who knows, I could always go back to using CARROT Weather if I find the Weather app to be unsatisfactory.

For the time being, I have decided to pay for the $7.99 a month Tier subscription through in-app purchases that I have paid this month and will do so again in September, with my expected cancellation coming once the release date of iOS 15 has been announced to the public.
