After the WWDC opening keynote, Apple issued a press release that covered several services-related features coming to all of the company’s software platforms later this year. One of these features is that users will be able to present their form of ID or driver’s license from their Wallet app at participating businesses and venues. All they need to do is to hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near the business’s iPhone to verify their age and identity.
The way this works is through the use of NFC. Once you present your device to the business’s iPhone, you use either Face ID or Touch ID to authenticate and consent, similar to how you make Apple Pay purchases. Best of all, businesses won’t need any extra hardware besides their iPhones to use this functionality.
This will be another step to eliminate the need to bring your physical driver’s license or form of ID. Since last year, the ability to store a driver’s license or state ID in the Apple Wallet app has eventually made its way across various states with Georgia being the latest to follow suit. Several more states as well as Puerto Rico will support this feature later this year.
