Apple has started rolling out macOS Sonoma 14.6 to the public with support for connecting two external displays to the 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro when the lid is closed, and also comes with bug fixes and security updates. This update comes over two and a half months after the release of macOS Sonoma 14.5 which came with new features in Apple News+. Apple keeps refining the software experience with every 14.x update whilst also fixing security issues.

As noted by MacRumors, Apple has updated their support document for macOS Sonoma to mention the new change. According to the support document, macOS Sonoma 14.6 “adds support for using up to two external displays when the laptop lid is closed on 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 chip and also provides important bug fixes and security updates.”

This feature was initially introduced with the M3 MacBook Air in March of 2024, so it is only sensible to also support the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 chip.

This update also addresses a whopping 54 security vulnerabilities with Messages, Kernel, ImageIO, WebKit, and more.

macOS Sonoma is compatible with the following Mac models:

  • MacBook Air (2018 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (2018 and later)
  • iMac (2019 and later)
  • iMac Pro (2017)
  • Mac mini (2018 and later)
  • Mac Studio (2022 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2019 and later)

In addition to macOS Sonoma 14.6, Apple has also released macOS Ventura 13.6.8 and macOS Monterey 12.7.6 for Macs running on older versions of macOS.

It is highly recommended to update your Mac to the latest software for the best experience and the best security. Did you notice any other changes in this update?
