If you’re looking forward to the next-generation iPhone Air, don’t hold your breath anytime soon. According to The Information, Apple decided to shelve the launch of the next-generation iPhone Air. Originally, we expected Apple to introduce the next-generation iPhone Air alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models in fall 2026, but it now looks like Apple’s plans to update its thinnest smartphone ever are now up in the air.
This may come as a bit of disappointment for customers who embraced the iPhone Air’s incredibly thin design or would love to see an improved version. I’ve seen several tech reviewers and enthusiasts who ended up having the iPhone Air as their primary phone. I personally thought the iPhone Air would have a meaningful place in the iPhone line as it could influence other smartphones with its cutting-edge technologies and design. You can read my article on why the iPhone Air could be the future of smartphones here.
Sure, the iPhone Air is ahead in terms of design since most of the components are housed in the camera plateau, but at the same time, the iPhone Air does have several compromises to begin with, including the single rear camera, single speaker, and not to mention, a smaller battery compared to that of any of the iPhone 17 models. I personally think the iPhone Air has been one of the most underrated products from Apple in history as customers have been raving about the iPhone Air’s shortcomings to no end. But I would also think that Apple didn’t promote the iPhone Air enough as it should. Instead, Apple has been heavily marketing the iPhone 17 Pro. With disappointing sales, Apple had to cut production for the iPhone Air by a significant margin, and this isn’t the first time we’ve seen poor sales of the fourth iPhone model: the smaller iPhone mini models didn’t sell well, and neither did the larger, but more affordable, iPhone Plus models.
I guess that’s why Apple called its thinnest smartphone as just “iPhone Air” instead of “iPhone 17 Air” since it’s technically a higher-priced model that’s less capable than the base iPhone 17. Since it’s technically a first-generation product in its own series; it may as well have a different upgrade cycle than the main base/Pro series. With the iPhone Air on hold, it looks like Apple will announce these smartphones in fall 2026: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and “iPhone Fold”. Apple will stagger the launch of the base iPhone 18 to spring 2017 alongside the budget-oriented iPhone 18e. I figure that Apple makes the base iPhone model so good that Apple has to push the launch of the base model to avoid cannibalization of the iPhone Pro’s sales, not to mention make more profit. Other features rumored for the next iPhone Air are an additional rear camera, vapor chamber cooling, and larger battery capacity. I really hope that Apple will still keep the iPhone Air much longer since it does have the potential to be more widely adopted by customers who want a larger screen without all the bulk and heftiness.
