After being announced at WWDC 2025 back in June, Apple has finally launched Digital ID in Apple Wallet for users in the U.S.
With this new addition, users can create a Digital ID with information from their U.S. passport in the Apple Wallet App so that it can be used to present it from their iPhone or Apple Watch when necessary.
In the words of Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, “With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” “Since introducing the ability to add a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet in 2022, we’ve seen how much users love having their ID right on their devices. Digital IDs brings this secure and convenient option to even more users across the country, as they can now add an ID to Wallet using information from their U.S. passport.”
Steps to Add Your Digital ID to Apple Wallet
- Open the Wallet App on your iPhone and tap on the plus (+) button.
- Tap on Digital ID (U.S. Passport)
- Select Add to iPhone and Apple Watch or Add to iPhone Only
- Scan the Photo Page of your U.S. Passport
- Place your iPhone on the Passport chip (near barcode on the inside of the back cover)
- Take a picture for verification. It records 2.5 seconds both before and after the actual picture. Click Continue
- Click Continue on the Additional Verification Screen and follow the on-screen instructions for head movements.
- Submit for Verification.
That’s it, you will receive a notification about the status soon.
According to Apple, “At launch, Digital ID acceptance will roll out first in beta at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports in the U.S. for in-person identity verification during domestic travel, with additional Digital ID acceptance use cases to come in the future.”
Steps to Present your Digital ID to TSA
- Double-click the Side Button
- Tap on the stack of cards
- Select the Digital ID that you added
- Hold your iPhone near the TSA Reader
- The TSA Reader will take a photo of you
- Information requested will be presented to you on your iPhone for verification, and you can present it by double-clicking the side button.

The feature requires you to have the following for it to work:
- An authentic and unexpired U.S. passport
- an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.1 or later
- Apple Watch Series 6 or later running watchOS 26.1 or later
- Region should be set to the United States

Apple says, “In the future, users will be able to present their Digital ID at additional select businesses and organizations for identity and age verification in person, in apps, and online.”
