Prototype collector Kosutami shared images of long-forgotten first-generation AirPods prototypes on X featuring bright charging cases in pink and yellow—shades reminiscent of the iconic iPhone 5c from 2013.

The prototypes showcase charging cases in vivid hues while keeping the earbuds and interior white. The pink case gleams with a soft, playful matte finish, paired alongside a bolder yellow variant that evokes summer vibes.

This isn’t Apple’s first foray into colorful designs for its wireless earbuds. Back in 2023, Kosutami showcased another set of prototypes matching the iPhone 7’s palette, yet Apple opted to maintain uniformity. Historically, AirPods have remained steadfastly white since their 2016 debut, with the exception of the AirPods Max headphones, which launched in multiple shades in 2020. The iPhone 5c’s bold, polycarbonate design—affordable and unapologetically colorful—seems to have inspired these early experiments.

For many users, the all-white AirPods have become a signature look, but not without criticism. Personalization is a growing demand in consumer tech, and colored cases could elevate the AirPods from functional tools to style statements.

While the first-gen AirPods revolutionized true wireless audio, their monochromatic aesthetic prioritized seamlessness over flair. As rumors swirl about future AirPods models with health-tracking features and improved battery life, one wonders if Apple might finally bring a colourful redesign.
