Apple’s manufacturing footprint in India is growing at an unprecedented pace, signaling a major shift in the global supply chain. According to The Economic Times, “Foxconn has hired nearly 30,000 staff for its new iPhone assembly unit in Devanahalli, near Bengaluru, in just eight to nine months”.
Sources close to the operation revealed that the factory began test production with the iPhone 16 back in April-May. Fast forward to today, and the facility is reportedly manufacturing the cutting-edge iPhone 17 Pro Max models. This is a significant milestone for “Assembled in India” iPhones. With over 80% of the production earmarked for export, this facility is rapidly becoming a critical node in serving Apple’s global market demand.
One of the most unique aspects of this new facility is its workforce demographic. Roughly 80% of the current headcount consists of women, most of whom are between the ages of 19 and 24 and entering the workforce for the first time.
To support this growing team, Foxconn is building what is essentially a “mini township.” The site features six large dormitories currently in use, with more under construction. The plan includes comprehensive on-site amenities ranging from medical facilities and schools to entertainment zones, ensuring a self-sustaining ecosystem for the workers.
Foxconn is investing a staggering ₹20,000 crore (approx. $2.4 billion USD) into this venture. While the current headcount is impressive, the facility is gearing up to engage up to a workforce of 50,000 people when it reaches peak production next year. This move would effectively eclipse Foxconn’s already established iPhone facility in Tamil Nadu, with a current workforce of 41000 people.
Industry watchers note that the facility will eventually house up to a dozen iPhone assembly lines, a massive jump from the four currently in operation. As Apple continues to navigate geopolitical challenges, this Bengaluru hub stands as a testament to the company’s successful strategy of supply chain resilience and the growing importance of India in the Apple ecosystem.
