Apple’s highly anticipated leap into smart eyewear has hit a sudden roadmap snag. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, Apple has officially pushed back the internal launch timeline for its first pair of AI smart glasses. Initially slated for a late 2026 announcement and an early 2027 release, the company is now aiming for a consumer debut at the very end of 2027.
The primary hurdle behind this scheduling shift involves Apple’s ambitious software plans. While the company’s revamped Siri digital assistant remains on track for later this year, its foundational visual AI features are proving much tougher to perfect. Apple executives reportedly chose the delay to avoid risking the launch of an unappealing or unpolished product.
When the glasses—internally code-named N50—finally arrive, they will serve as a lightweight hardware platform for Apple Intelligence. The first-generation design will feature unique colors, an array of frame styles, and distinct oval-shaped cameras to stand out from existing competitors like the Meta Ray-Bans. Over time, Apple envisions these glasses evolving to support complex health tracking and full augmented reality (AR)—a technology that overlays digital data directly onto the real world.
Apple views the eyewear market as a massive financial opportunity to reach billions of everyday consumers. The tech giant actively wants to capture users who already depend on prescription lenses, wear casual sunglasses, or treat glasses as a standard fashion accessory. Taking extra development time ensures that the hardware can comfortably replace traditional frames.
On the other side of Apple’s spatial computing portfolio, there is fresh news regarding a budget-friendly headset option. Gurman notes that Apple has redirected resources into developing a slimmer, lighter, and more affordable version of the Vision Pro, which could be dubbed “Vision Air.” This upcoming consumer-focused headset is currently tracking toward an official release in late 2028 or 2029.
