Today marks the end of the era for the iPhone X as Apple just added that smartphone to its worldwide list of obsolete products. Along with that smartphone, Apple also added the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro to that list.
The iPhone X was introduced on September 12, 2017, and it launched on November 3, 2017. It became a milestone product for Apple back in that era for several reasons. It was the iPhone that celebrated the 10th anniversary since the original model launched, and it was the first one with a true, significant redesign that Apple had envisioned for years in the making. It did away with the top/bottom bezels to allow for an edge-to-edge OLED display with rounded corners that follow along the device’s edges. It was the first iPhone to implement Face ID, which Apple claimed to be even more secure than Touch ID. Face ID was made possible thanks to the TrueDepth camera system that enables things like Animoji. It featured a premium-feeling stainless steel frame, and the iPhone X came in silver and black. Despite the controversial notch, it was a smartphone that was so ahead of its time back in the day. The iPhone X was discontinued on September 12, 2018, when Apple debuted the iPhone XR and iPhone XS, but that smartphone continued to be offered by select resellers for a while.
For the 2018 MacBook Pro (introduced on July 12, 2018), that model featured the controversial design with the Touch Bar and the butterfly keyboard, and the 2018 iteration of those MacBook Pro models brought 8th-generation “Coffee Lake” Intel processors. For the 15-inch models, specifically, you could configure it with a higher-end AMD Radeon Pro video card. Unfortunately, those models also became infamous for their thermal throttling. Interestingly, both the 13-inch and 15-inch 2018 MacBook Pro models were discontinued on May 21, 2019; however, the smaller 13-inch model hasn’t been declared ‘obsolete’ yet. It shouldn’t be long before Apple adds that to its obsolete products list.
