Apple today announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its “Surprise and shine” event.

The iPhone 18 Pro brings a much-awaited smaller Dynamic Island, which now allows for up to 3 live activities at once instead of 2. The Dynamic Island design has been the same since its introduction with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, and this is the first time it has been altered.

The A20 Pro chip on the iPhone 18 Pro is now based on a 2nm architecture with a 6-core CPU (including 2-super cores), enabling 20% better performance, a 7-core GPU, offering up to 40% faster performance, and a 32-core Neural Engine. The iPhone 18 Pro can provide up to 2x better sustained performance when compared to the iPhone 16 Pro due to its significant improvement in thermals, with cooling being three times better.

Charging is faster too, with the iPhone now capable of charging from 0-50% in just 15 minutes,

For the first time, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max now have a variable aperture in the 48MP main camera. This has been a feature on some older Android phones, such as the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

According to Apple “The new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture is the most advanced camera Apple has ever made, bringing aperture control to iPhone for the first time along with even more creative control. Six laser-cut blades smoothly transition between different apertures, making it incredibly easy to capture the best shot by automatically adjusting for depth of field and lighting. Combined with a new sensor that improves image quality, the result is better low-light photography, crisper detail in the back of group photos, and more unique shots. Variable aperture also provides more control for creative pros by giving them the ability to manually adjust any of the four aperture settings in the Camera app, and an API is available to developers for even more control across the aperture range in their apps.”

In terms of pricing, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 for 256GB. The smaller Pro now has a 2TB option too. More information on pricing to follow. The price hikes are lower than expected, with the base model being $100 more expensive rather than $200-$300, which was previously rumored.

The phone comes in four new finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier, and a new Burgundy colour. Pre-orders will begin on September 12th, starting at 5:00 a.m. PT, and the iPhone 18 Pro will be available on September 25th.
