Apple Unveils Apple Watch Series 12: Advanced Health Sensing, Readiness Scores, and Audio Intelligence

Apple has officially introduced the Apple Watch Series 12, marking a leap forward for the world’s most popular smartwatch. Engineered with a cutting-edge Health Sensing System and powered by the new S11 silicon, the device focuses heavily on granular health data, faster performance, and deep Apple Intelligence integration. The hardware lineup also sees the return of ceramic finishes alongside refreshed aluminum and titanium options.

At the core of the Series 12 is an overhauled optical heart sensor that records heart rate measurements every five seconds throughout the day. Paired with the S11 chip, Apple claims this delivers the most accurate heart rate and step tracking in any wearable. Heart rate variability (HRV) is now logged up to 24 times more frequently, splitting into separate Recovery and Overall HRV metrics to give users clearer insights into daily physical strain and long-term cardiovascular health.

Apple is introducing a native “Readiness” score. Ranging from 0 to 10, the score evaluates recent activity, sleep quality, daytime vitals, and training load to deliver direct recommendations like “Recover” or “Go For It.” The algorithmic updates extend to everyday use as well, adding a dedicated Steps watch face complication and a redesigned pedometer model. Battery life sees notable improvements, jumping to 10 hours of continuous outdoor workout tracking—a 25 percent increase over the previous generation. Overall everyday battery life remains steady at up to 24 hours. Charging speeds have also accelerated, requiring just 15 minutes on the charger to deliver up to 12 hours of normal use.

The S11 chip unlocks a new class of on-device Audio Intelligence features designed to keep users engaged and aware. Features like Live Rewind generate short text snippets of the last 15 seconds of a conversation via a double-press of the Digital Crown, while Siri Recap provides high-level takeaways. Built with privacy in mind, audio processing takes place in a hardware-isolated Secure Enclave on the S11 chip, ensuring recordings are never stored or shared.

Running watchOS 27, the Series 12 integrates personal-context Siri AI, intuitive single-handed tap gestures for the Smart Stack, and perimenopause tracking. Aluminum models arrive in dark bronze, black, light gold, and space gray with tougher Ceramic Shield 2 glass, alongside radiant gold and natural titanium cases.

Pre-orders for Apple Watch Series 12 begin today, with official store availability starting Friday, September 18. Later this year, a redesigned iPhone Health app will launch with a dedicated Longevity tab and Health Age scoring.
