Apple today announced the long-awaited foldable, the iPhone Duo, at its “Surprise and shine” event, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12, and Ultra 4.
This year, Apple has changed the release schedule for the iPhone lineup, as rumored for the last few months. The focus for September has now pivoted towards the Pro and Foldable lineup, with the base iPhone 18, iPhone Air 2, and iPhone 18e rumored to launch in March or April of next year. This new sequence is expected to remain in future iPhone lineups as well.
The foldable has a 7.6-inch inner display with an under-display FaceTime camera for the first time ever on the iPhone, and a 5.4-inch outer display with a hole-punch camera cutout on the top-right corner.
According to Apple, “iPhone Duo delivers Apple’s largest iPhone display in an entirely new design. Closed, iPhone Duo is comfortable to use one-handed and fits easily in a pocket, with a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display that provides 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Opened, the 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max, offering an immersive canvas for everything users do. A premium nano-texture finish reduces glare and reflections, creating a matte surface that minimizes crease visibility and feels great to touch. Beneath the inner display, a new FaceTime camera stays hidden when not in use to keep the screen uninterrupted. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, designed for how people use their iPhone, so the experience feels continuous whether iPhone Duo is open or closed. The displays also feature ProMotion, Always On, and 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Later this year, iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C, allowing users to take notes, sketch, or mark up documents on either display.”
An important distinction to note is that it comes with Touch ID integrated into the power button, and not Face ID.
In terms of the software behavior, the iPhone dock now sits on the right instead of the bottom for the outer display, with other navigation UI, including the status bar, also shifted towards the right. The inner display now has support for Split View multitasking, with support for saving app pairs.
Moreover, Standby mode now works even when the iPhone is running on battery and not charging. You can place the Duo in a tent style position, which will also activate Standby Mode.
What powers the iPhone Duo?
Similar to the iPhone 18 Pro, the A20 Pro chip on the iPhone Duo is based on a 2nm architecture with a 6-core CPU (including 2-super cores), offering up to 20% faster performance when compared to the A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU that offers up to 40% faster performance, and a 32-core Neural Engine. In terms of battery life, the iPhone Duo offers up to 31 hours of video playback with the inner display, up to 44 hours of video playback with the outer display, and 24 hours of video playback when both are used equally. The Duo is capable of charging from 0-50% in just 20 minutes. The Duo also has the C2 chip for cellular connectivity, which now supports mmWave 5G.
You might be thinking: But is it durable enough to withstand my daily usage? According to Apple, “It’s crafted from grade 5 titanium for incredible strength, with an enclosure that has an elegant mirror-polished finish and a 3D-printed hinge cover with a contrasting micro-blasted finish. Ceramic Shield protects the back of iPhone Duo, and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front has 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation. iPhone Duo is also splash-, water-, and dust-resistant with an IP68 rating. The hinge is engineered from more than 100 components to precisely control opening and closing and support the center of the display, delivering a smooth, satisfying feel. Internally, support ribs reinforce the structure for added stiffness, while antenna splits with ceramic fiber inserts enhance the frame’s rigidity.
The inner display is designed to withstand the wear of everyday use. A scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer — made from a custom polymer with up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry — protect the surface. High-strength glass sits above and below the folding display panel, with custom adhesives that allow the layers to glide past one another like the pages of a book, relieving bend stress, and a titanium plate at the bottom further enhances durability.”
What about the Cameras?
The iPhone Duo features a dual camera system, with the main being a 48MP Fusion Camera, which doubles as a telephoto-quality camera, with an option to zoom in 2x. The 24MP mode is still default in the camera. Unfortunately, this lens does not have a variable aperture like the iPhone 18 Pro, but it does have the 48MP Ultra-Wide camera from the iPhone 18 Pro. There is no dedicated Telephoto lens in the Duo.
In terms of pricing, the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB. It comes in two different finishes: Star White and Night Sky. Pre-orders will begin on October 16th, starting at 5:00 a.m. PT, it will be available on October 23rd.
