Apple has officially launched the Apple Watch Ultra 4, raising the bar once again for endurance athletes, outdoor adventurers, and fitness enthusiasts. Powered by the all-new S11 chip and an advanced Health Sensing System, the rugged smartwatch delivers upgraded accuracy, groundbreaking battery performance, and deep Apple Intelligence integration. Available in natural and black titanium, it stands as Apple’s most capable and resilient wearable to date.

Precision health monitoring takes center stage thanks to newly architected optical and electrical sensors. The optical heart sensor features larger, power-efficient green LEDs that capture heart rate readings every five seconds all day long, while heart rate variability (HRV) is logged up to 24 times more often. Apple splits HRV into Recovery HRV for daily strain tracking and overall HRV for cardiovascular trends, allowing users to spot shifts in daytime and overnight vitals earlier than ever.

To help athletes optimize training without overexerting themselves, the Ultra 4 introduces a dedicated Readiness score ranging from 0 to 10. By analyzing training load, sleep scores, recent activity, and vitals against baselines from the Apple Heart and Movement Study, the watch offers direct guidance such as “Recover,” “Pace Yourself,” “Ready,” or “Go For It.” Pedometer accuracy has also been rebuilt using machine learning algorithms on the S11 chip to deliver real-time step counts directly on the watch face via a new Steps complication.

Battery life sees massive upgrades engineered specifically for ultra-endurance challenges. The Ultra 4 now delivers up to 50 hours of normal daily use, expanding to 84 hours in Low Power Mode, with rapid charging that provides 18 hours of power in just 15 minutes. For outdoor activities, the new Extended Workout mode tracks full GPS and heart rate for up to 25 hours, while the Max Extended Workout mode sustains outdoor runs and hikes for up to 45 hours—plenty of endurance for a 100-mile ultramarathon.

The watch debuts privacy-first Audio Intelligence features powered by a dedicated hardware-isolated Secure Exclave. Tools like Live Rewind generate short text snippets of the last 15 seconds of speech with a double press of the Digital Crown, while Siri Recap summarizes conversations without storing raw audio. Running watchOS 27, the Ultra 4 also introduces single-handed tap gestures for Smart Stack widgets, standalone Workout Buddy motivation, and fresh band options, including translucent silicone Ocean Bands.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 is available for pre-order today, hitting store shelves on Friday, September 18. Later this year, an updated iPhone Health app will launch with a new Longevity tab and Health Age scoring to provide an even deeper look into long-term fitness.
