Undoubtedly, this year’s iPhones will be powered by the A13 chip, and according to reports from DigiTimes, the A13 chip will continue to use the 7-nanometer process, the same as last year’s A12 Bionic chip. Now, they have confirmed that the A14 chip that’s expected to be available on the 2020 iPhones will adopt a more advanced 5-nanometer process.

TSMC recently confirmed that the company plans to invest $25 billion in mass production of 5-nanometer chips by 2020. These chips are likely to be used in next year’s iPhone models. Last year, Apple introduced the first A12 bionic processor that uses a 7-nm process. The A12 and iPad Pro’s A12X chips in the iPhone XS series far outperform their competitors in terms of performance.

Although the manufacturing process itself is not directly linked to the performance of the chip, the smaller the gap between the transistors, usually means that there are more transistors on the same surface area, and the energy efficiency is better, resulting in improved performance. What users can expect is that Apple’s mobile chip design and TSMC’s continuous packaging improvements will enhance performance in future iPhones and deliver longer battery life.
