A few days ago, the British consumer rights organization “Which?” in a statement claimed that Apple exaggerated the battery life of several iPhones. According to the report, the actual talk time of the iPhone XR is 51% less than Apple’s claimed battery life. Subsequently, Apple responded by saying that different test methods will result in different results.

The organization said it tested nine different iPhone models and found that Apple overstates these devices’ battery life by 18% to 51%. For example, the iPhone XR talk time in the test was 16 hours and 32 minutes, while Apple officially claimed that the phone can offer up to 25 hours of talk time. Apple has issued the following statement:

We rigorously test our products and stand behind our battery life claims. With tight integration between hardware and software, the iPhone is engineered to intelligently manage power usage to maximize battery life. Our testing methodology reflects that intelligence. Which? haven’t shared their methodology with us so we can’t compare their results to ours. We share our methodology for testing which we publish in detail here.

Of course, the smartphone battery life will vary according to different usage environments, frequency, cellular and wireless connection settings, and even weather. Various test methods will lead to various results. Plus we are unclear what method did Which? use, so don’t take it too severely.
