Riders of the New York City transit system will soon have a more convenient way to access their subway card and paying to use the transit subway system.

Users will be able to use their iPhone or Apple Watch to access their subway card or credit/debit card to be able to take the subway. This will require users to update to iOS 12.3 and watchOS 5.2.1. Also, the user will have to have their subway card or their credit/debit card added to the Apple Wallet app.

The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) plans to have Apple Pay and NFC contactless ready to go on Friday, May 31, 2019. The rollout will be limited to, “4, 5, 6 lines between Grand Central-42 Street in Manhattan and Atlantic Ave-Barclays Center in Brooklyn (16 stations in all), along with Staten Island buses,” according to TechCrunch.

The TechCrunch article additionally states that there should be a full rollout of Apple Pay  and more fare options by 2020. The MTA by then plans to have Apple Pay available on subways and routes.
