According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will begin developing a less expensive external display. The display is rumored to be sold alongside the Pro Display XDR as a cheaper alternative.
The Pro XDR display was announced back in WWDC 2019 and released in December 2019. Its Retina 6K display and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio all shocked the audience; just as much as the $5,000 starting price plus the $999 Pro Stand. The heavy price tag which seemed outrageous for the everyday user seemed justified for the film industries where the typical monitor costs upwards of $30,000 Flanders Scientific XM311K and the EIZO ColorEdge Prominence CG3145.
The gap between the “pro” user and the typical consumer left many feeling unfulfilled considering the last Apple external display was discontinued in 2016 and had been released back in 2011. With this new external display in development, Apple is looking to create a display that is affordable enough by removing some of the Pro XDR feature’s responsible for the high price tag.
