We reported last month that both the ESPN and ABC News apps on the Apple TV third generation were going to cease operations starting the following month. That day has come.

As of today, both apps are officially no longer available for use on the Apple TV third generation. Now when loading either of the apps on this Apple TV, it simply tells the user that the app is “unavailable.”

The only ways now to get access from the ESPN and ABC News apps on a TV screen are through tvOS-based devices like the Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K.

Of course, content from ESPN and ABC News can still be accessed and AirPlayed through products like the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad to the Apple TV third generation.

Since ESPN and ABC are owned by Disney, it makes sense for the apps to go offline on the same day.

Other apps the Apple TV third generation has lost this year are MLB.TV, YouTube, FOX NOW and CBS All Access (now Paramount+, which can be accessed on said Apple TV through Apple TV Channels).

What are your thoughts on the ESPN and ABC News apps no longer working on the Apple TV third generation? Let us know on Twitter at @appleosophy.
