Apple announced today that it has officially launched support for Tap to Pay in Australia.
Tap to Pay essentially enables iPhone users to turn their phone into a mobile point-of-sale and allows businesses to be able to accept payments from other iPhones with features like Apple Pay and Apple Card, as well as credit and debit cards with contactless capabilities on them.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said the introduction of support for this feature in Australia is going to help make big and small businesses much better when it comes to payment convenience and security.
“Australia is a nation of entrepreneurs and innovators, and small and medium-sized businesses are at the heart of the country’s workforce, employing millions of Australians. Now, with Tap to Pay on iPhone it’s easier than ever for businesses of any size to seamlessly accept contactless payments using only their iPhone, wherever they do business,” she said. “The convenience of Tap to Pay on iPhone empowers Australian businesses to offer easy, secure, and private contactless payment experiences to their customers, and help them run and grow their business.”
Westpac and Tyro Payments are the first payment sources that will be enabling Tap to Pay services to happen in Australia. Apple has also stated that other payment platforms such as “ANZ Worldline Payment Solutions, Stripe, Till Payments, and Zeller, will make this secure and convenient capability available in the coming months.”
Tap to Pay is available to use on the iPhone XS and newer, and requires the iPhone to be running at least iOS 16.4 or newer.
