PSA: Don’t Update to iOS 16.5 If You’re Using Apple’s Lightning to USB Adapter

Avatar for Nick Soong

If you’ve been using Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter for either your iPhone or iPad, you might not want to skip updating to iOS 16.5 or iPadOS 16.5 for now.

According to several users across Apple Support Community and Reddit, they’ve complained that that accessory does not work with any of the aforementioned models running the latest software update as it no longer powers any external devices connect to any of the ports. This is most likely a minor software bug, so Apple could issue another minor update to address this issue sooner rather than later.

iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 was released earlier this week, and they brought several enhancements, including a Sports tab in the News app, an all-new Pride Celebration lock screen for iOS in honor of Pride Month, and other bug fixes across the core features.

If you’re not familiar with this accessory, it has a Lightning port on one end and on the other end, there’s a USB-A port for you to connect to any USB-powered accessory to an iPhone or iPad as well as a Lightning port to charge your device simultaneously. This accessory has been compatible with every iPhone model since the iPhone 5 and all iPad models that have the Lightning port. (Remember that the 9th generation iPad is the only model with a Lightning port that Apple currently sells.)

So what’s next for iOS? Apple pushed out its first developer beta releases of iOS 16.6 a few days ago; however, we could wait several weeks for the final release for that. Additionally, with WWDC just around the corner, Apple is expected to introduce iOS 17, which will bring even more enhancements to existing features across the board.

It works if you use Apple’s new USB-C chargers instead of the old ones.

Gosh, can you guys check your writing before publishing. Your sentence tells people they don’t want to skip not downloading the latest firmware where you want to say don’t download latest.
