In the latest edition of Mark Gurman’s weekly newsletter “Powered On,” he reports that the next generation iMac is in the works to be released within the next year or two, including the longly anticipated larger model with a screen size of larger than 30 inches.

The iMac had offered a 27-inch display size until last year when they discontinued that model last year. Currently, the 24-inch model is the only iMac that Apple sells new. If you prefer a screen larger than that, the Mac Studio paired with the Studio Display is the best substitute for a larger, powerful desktop setup; however, some people would like to have an all-in-one setup.

The current Apple Silicon-based iMac was introduced back in April 2021. Powered by the revolutionary M1 chip, this machine brings a brilliant and fun design that’s inspired by the original iMac as it comes in seven colors that represent the classic Apple logo. While the rest of the Mac lineup has been updated with the M2 series of chips, this leaves only the iMac in the dust. However, this report indicates that the iMac is not going away anytime soon, as we can still expect the iMac to skip the M2 chip upgrade, but will instead feature the upcoming M3 chip, which will use the more advanced 3nm process.

As for the upcoming large model, we’ve been hearing several rumors about the larger Apple Silicon-based iMac; however, that machine has not seen the light of day. Although Gurman hasn’t reported which chip that larger iMac will use, it’s still possible that that machine could feature a more powerful chip in the M3 line, either Pro, Max, or Ultra. So we could see either the return of the iMac Pro or the introduction of iMac Studio to keep the Studio suffix consistent with other Mac products that are studio-oriented (though that’s wishful thinking). Imagine an iMac Pro/Studio with a 32-inch Retina 6K display. Apple could bring LED display technology to that machine to keep the price more competitive. If Apple were to offer that machine at around $2,000, it would be a huge seller for creative professionals who want an all-in-one setup.
