Yesterday, Apple introduced both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro which feature USB-C for the first time, which also supports DisplayPort for up to 4K HDR video mirroring and video output to either an external monitor or TV, as noted in the tech specs for all of the models. This is a major upgrade in the video output capabilities when compared to Lightning, which is limited to up to 1080p resolution when using Apple’s Lightning-to-HDMI or Lightning-to-VGA adapters.

Similar to how DisplayPort is supported on many of the Mac and iPad models with USB-C, DisplayPort on any iPhone 15 or 15 Pro can output video at up to 4K resolution at 60Hz natively when connected to any DisplayPort-equipped monitor with a USB-C to DisplayPort cable. There are a few things to take note of: if you use Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, you’ll lose out on the HDR quality, but you’ll retain the 4K/60Hz video output when connected to any HDMI-equipped monitor. Also, unlike the current iPad Air and iPad Pro models, you still won’t get external display support on any of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models.

Both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro will be available to order on September 15 with availability starting September 22. Make sure to follow us on @Appleosophy to hear even more stories on the all-new products announced this week.
