Apple has always revolutionized biometric authentication across all of its products with Touch ID on Macs and most iPads and Face ID on iPad Pro and modern iPhones. With Vision Pro, Apple has provided a great solution for users to unlock the unit with their eyes with Optic ID. With the launch of the Vision Pro, Apple has provided even more details of Apple’s iris authentication solution.
Just like with Touch ID and Face ID, Optic ID can be used to quickly unlock Vision Pro, make purchases using Apple Pay or on the App Store, log in to third-party websites or apps, and so on. Setting up Optic ID is also a prerequisite for creating your own Persona.
Optic ID works similarly to Face ID in a few ways in that it adapts to both of your irises every time you successfully authenticate with Optic ID. Additionally, Optic ID is always encrypted as it’s always inside the Secure Enclave. It never leaves the device nor it is stored in the cloud. In fact, the probability that a stranger could unlock your Vision Pro using Optic ID is less than one in a million.
Optic ID is not only safe and secure but also safe to use as it meets international safety standards. Optic ID will also work with vision correction lens from ZEISS.
For extra security, Vision Pro requires your password to enable Optic ID with the following conditions that are the same as those of Touch ID and Face ID:
- After five consecutive failed match attempts
- After you turn on or restart your Vision Pro
- You haven’t unlocked Vision Pro for at least 48 hours.
- You haven’t used your passcode to unlock Vision Pro in the last 6.5 days and Optic ID hasn’t unlocked the unit in the last 4 hours.
To safeguard your Vision Pro even further, you can set the Vision Pro to erase all personal content and settings after ten consecutive failed passcode attempts, similar to other Apple devices.
