Both the AirPods and the AirPods Max are next to be updated in the lineup, and Mark Gurman’s latest edition of his Powered On newsletter has a report on when Apple may launch the new models. He expects the fourth generation of the standard AirPods model to launch either in September or October.
While the AirPods (4th generation) is expected to feature a new design with better fit, improved sound quality, and a USB-C port in the charging case, this upcoming model will also come in two versions where the upgraded version will be more similar to the current AirPods Pro (2nd generation) by featuring Active Noise Cancellation and a speaker integrated into the charging case for Find My integration.
This isn’t the first time that Apple has offered two versions of the standard AirPods model. When Apple introduced the second generation, it offered two versions – one with a Lightning case that charges only with a Lightning cable and the other that is also capable of wireless charging with Qi chargers. For the third generation, Apple offers the same versions – one with a Lightning case and the other with a MagSafe case.
When Apple launches the fourth generation of AirPods this fall, both the second and third-generation of AirPods will be discontinued, simplifying the lineup. We don’t expect the AirPods Pro to receive an update until next year, but the AirPods Max will be updated with just a USB-C port if nothing else.
