The iPad Pro was last updated in October 2022, and it’s been almost one and a half years since Apple introduced any new iPads. As the wait keeps getting longer and longer, more people have been anticipating the release of the upcoming iPad Pros. With the latest beta of iPadOS 17.5 released to developers last week, 9to5Mac has discovered references to the new display firmware for four unreleased iPad models, which further corroborates several sources that Apple will bring OLED displays to the iPad Pro for the first time. The upcoming model identifiers are:
- iPad16,3
- iPad16,4
- iPad16,5
- iPad16,6
This is in line with what Apple currently offers for the iPad Pro – two sizes with both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi+Cellular options.
Due to several production difficulties for the more advanced, larger OLED displays, the upcoming iPad Pros have faced several delays. A recent DSCC report suggested that LG and Samsung will produce 11-inch panels while LG will produce all 12.9-inch OLED panels.
That’s not all that 9to5Mac recently discovered as the source found more references to the next-generation Apple Pencil. Based on the newly-founded references, the unreleased model will feature two new gestures: “LongSqueeze” and “DoubleSqueeze.” Currently, the second-generation Apple Pencil relies on double-tap to quickly switch between tools and other quick actions. This indicates that the next Apple Pencil will feature force sensors, similar to what Apple implemented with its current AirPods and AirPods Pro models.
Mark German expects Apple to release the new iPad Air, iPad Pro, and redesigned accessories as soon as the second week of May.
