Last week, reputable display analyst Ross Young came out with a surprise report that the upcoming larger iPad Air model would borrow the mini-LED display from the current larger iPad Pro. However, he now reports that will not be the case anymore.

Due to the higher costs of producing those panels, Apple will choose to use the traditional LCD panels on the larger iPad Air model to reduce costs, expand the price gap between the new Air and Pro models further, and further differentiate the larger iPad Air from its Pro counterpart. The next iPad Pros are expected to feature OLED displays for the first time, so both sizes will be more expensive than the current ones. With that said, both upcoming iPad Air models will use LCD panels.

However, Young adds that Apple may introduce another iPad model with a 12.9-inch mini-LED display in the fourth quarter of 2024. We’re not sure what this future iPad will be called. If Steve Jobs were to run Apple, he’d be asking a similar question when he introduced the original iPad, “is there room for another iPad model – something that’s between the iPad Air and iPad Pro?”

Nonetheless, it will still be very interesting to see how Apple will slot in a new model for the iPad lineup.

We expect Apple to introduce both the new iPad Air and iPad Pro at Apple’s “Let loose event” on May 7 at 7 am PT.
