Apple introduced its breakthrough iPad Pro with the industry-leading M4 chip and tandem OLED (Ultra Retina XDR displays), but one feature that’s missing from the latest models is 5G mmWave support.
Apple introduced 5G starting with the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro series back in October 2020. Several months later, the company brought 5G connectivity and mmWave technology to its M1-based iPad Pro models in April 2021. 5G support eventually trickled down to its lower-end iPads, including the iPad (10th generation). However, mmWave remained exclusive to the Pro models, which made its way to the M2 (iPad Pro) models; however, the company decided to drop mmWave on its latest iPad Pro models.
Two reasons for that may be that users weren’t able to take full advantage of that technology depending on where they were and that the technology was a bit expensive to produce overall. So by eliminating mmWave, Apple was able to offset its R&D costs while keeping the iPad Pro not as expensive as before.
