The AirPods lineup provides an unparalleled wireless listening experience across every Apple product that you own, and Apple is looking for ways to enhance that experience further.

According to a report from reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is set to kickstart mass production of future “AirPods with camera modules” by 2026. Those camera modules will be similar to the ones found in the TrueDepth camera system on the iPhone, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro, which enables Face ID on both the iPhone and iPad Pro and in-air hand gesture interaction on Vision Pro.

Reportedly, Apple’s goal for those camera modules is to integrate with all Vision headsets seamlessly, both now and in the future. Those IR cameras will also be able to detect in-air gesture control for quick contact-free interactions. This concept for AirPods is quite interesting, and it has been part of several products that Apple has been exploring new smart wearable technologies as reported by Mark Gurman back in February. Only time will tell if Apple goes forward with development on this project.
