Back in May, Apple introduced the next-generation M4 chip with its breakthrough iPad Pro models. The M4 chip offers major improvements in the Neural Engine, allowing the iPad Pro to perform AI-related tasks faster than ever before. The iPad Pro has been the only Apple product with the M4 chip as the entire Mac lineup has yet to get the treatment. So when can we expect M4-based Macs?

According to Mark Gurman in his latest edition of the Powered On newsletter, he expects Apple to update every Mac in the lineup as soon as this fall. He expects the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac to be upgraded with the M4 series of chips first, followed by updates for the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro next year.

Although the upgrade to the M4 will mainly focus on performance improvements related to AI and the upcoming Apple Intelligence features, Gurman says “there is at least one Mac model that will get more dramatic changes.” The MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac have been recently redesigned thanks to Apple Silicon. The Mac Studio was introduced as a new Mac model in the transition to Apple Silicon so that leaves both the Mac mini and Mac Pro as likely candidates for a possible redesign. However, Gurman previously reported that Apple is developing a thinner design for the MacBook Pro as the latest ultra-thin iPad Pro sets the latest design standards for other Apple products for years to come. It won’t be long to see a new Mac around the corner.
