In Mark Gurman’s latest edition of the Powered On newsletter, he reiterated that Apple is still planning to launch two variants of the AirPods as soon as this fall. Currently, Apple still sells the second and third generations of the regular AirPods, reaching more price points for consumers. So having two variants of the fourth generation will replace the soon-to-be former models in the line.
The fourth generation of AirPods will be a significant upgrade to the third generation as it’s expected to have a tweaked design to allow for a better fit, enhanced audio quality, and the adoption of USB-C for charging the case. However, what will primarily set the two variants apart is that the higher-tier model will have Active Noise Cancellation, so trickling this feature down to the standard model will make this feature available to customers at a much lower price.
Gurman has no word about the next update for the AirPods Max, which was introduced back in December 2020, and hasn’t received an update since. Also, the AirPods Pro will receive an update later in 2025 at the earliest. That being said, this will be a worthy update for those who prefer the wireless audio experience that Apple offers with AirPods without all the bells and whistles.
