We reported earlier this year that by the end of 2024, the MAX streaming service would begin its new filtering and restriction of password-sharing among users.
In a Q3 earnings conference call yesterday, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels did verify that the company will begin restricting password-sharing throughout the next few months, according to BGR.
It was stated that there will be “very soft messaging” to MAX users, with more visibility of password-sharing crackdown usage by 2025 and 2026.
For users who want to keep sharing their password and account with a friend or family member, that will be fine, but the user who already pays for the account will have to pay more to share that password and overall account with said friend or family member.
This is a similar practice other streaming services have done over the course of this year, as well as last year, such as on Netflix and Disney+.
It is currently unknown how much a user would have to pay extra each month on MAX for having a friend or family member sharing the same password and account. Right now, Netflix currently charges an additional $7.99 a month to share an account with someone who is not in the same home as the account owner.
