It has been reported by MacRumors this morning that it has received word from a Walmart spokesperson that the company currently does not and will not be supporting Apple Pay in the near future.

The spokesperson said the following to MacRumors:

“We do not accept NFC and instead have implemented convenient solutions, such as Walmart Pay, that provide our customers easy, touchless payments on any smartphone. We have also invested in innovative technologies that go beyond payments, such as Scan & Go, which allow Sam’s Club and Walmart+ members to bypass the checkout altogether, providing a truly touchless shopping experience.”

Walmart Pay and the Scan & Go payment options are available in the Walmart and Sam’s Club iOS apps.

Walmart Pay is used at the self-checkout or regular checkout at a Walmart retail store where the user already has their card information added to their Walmart account online and then scans a QR code with the Walmart app from their iPhone, which then processes the transaction that way.

It should be noted that major competitors to Walmart and Sam’s Club such as Target and Costco do currently accept Apple Pay.

In fact, most major grocery store chains accept it too such as Fareway, Hy-Vee, Cub Foods, Publix, Kroger and Kroger-owned grocery stores, Food Lion, and many others do accept Apple Pay.

A huge move last year was Apple Pay finally getting accepted at Texas-based grocery store chain H-E-B. On top of that, over the past couple of years, even Lowe’s and The Home Depot have begun accepting Apple Pay.

As it stands right now, only Walmart in Canada currently accepts Apple Pay.

What are your thoughts on Walmart still not accepting Apple Pay in its stores or online in the U.S. in 2025? Comment below or let us know on X at @appleosophy.
