Apple is reportedly working on a major overhaul for some of its most popular devices — the MacBook Air, iPad mini, and iPad Air — with plans to introduce higher-end OLED displays across the lineup. According to Bloomberg, the company is already testing new versions of these devices equipped with OLED screens, marking another step in Apple’s gradual shift away from traditional LCD technology.
Among the three, the iPad mini is expected to lead the way, with an OLED-equipped model potentially arriving as early as next year. The upgrade, reportedly code-named J510, will bring richer colors, deeper blacks, and improved contrast compared to the current LCD-based model. However, this leap in display technology could come with a price — Bloomberg suggests the next iPad mini could cost up to $100 more due to the more expensive OLED panels.
The current iPad mini was last refreshed in late 2024, gaining a faster processor and support for Apple Intelligence. If this timeline holds, the OLED version could represent one of the most significant upgrades to the mini in years. While the next iPad Air expected this spring will retain its LCD display, Apple reportedly plans to bring OLED to the Air lineup in a future generation, following the iPad Pro’s successful OLED transition in 2024.
As for the MacBook Air, Apple has begun early work on a version that will feature an OLED screen — but don’t expect it anytime soon. Bloomberg reports that the MacBook Air won’t make the switch before 2028, with the M5 chip expected to debut in the current LCD design by spring 2026. Meanwhile, the MacBook Pro will lead the Mac lineup’s OLED transition in its next redesign.
Apple’s move to OLED is part of a long-term strategy that began in 2015 with the Apple Watch, later expanding to the iPhone lineup with the iPhone X in 2017. The company officially completed the transition for its smartphones this year when it replaced the iPhone SE with the OLED-equipped iPhone 16e.
