Rivian is preparing to roll out native Apple Wallet car key support for its second-generation R1S and R1T electric vehicles. Rivian’s Chief Software Officer, Wassym Bensaid, confirmed in a social media post, the feature will arrive with the 2025.46 over-the-air (OTA) software update later this month, though a specific launch date was not provided.
This new integration moves basic access away from the Rivian app, placing the digital key directly inside Apple Wallet.
Key Features of Rivian’s Apple Wallet Car Key
-
Seamless Access: Owners can use their iPhone or Apple Watch to remotely unlock, lock, and start a second-generation R1S or R1T.
-
Ultra Wideband (UWB) for Passive Entry: The feature uses UWB technology in the Gen 2 vehicles for highly accurate proximity detection, enabling passive entry—you can simply keep your iPhone in your pocket as you approach or leave the vehicle.
-
Express Mode Support: The digital key supports Express Mode, meaning unlocking the device with Face ID is not required for access.
-
Power Reserve: If your iPhone’s battery runs out, the Apple Wallet key can still be used for up to five hours after the device has shut off, preventing lockouts.
-
Key Sharing: Owners can share the digital car key with up to eight family members or friends via AirDrop or any messaging app, such as the Messages app or WhatsApp. This doubles the previous limit of four digital keys.
The upgrade to the native, OS-level Digital Key is only for the second-generation R1S and R1T models. First-generation R1S and R1T vehicles (built through the 2024 model year) will not support Apple Wallet car keys because they lack the necessary UWB hardware.
Despite adopting Apple Wallet integration, Rivian remains opposed to CarPlay integration. Rivian’s infotainment still offers a native Apple Music app, which is available to users with a Connect+ subscription. The Connect+ subscription costs $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year and includes other features like in-vehicle hotspot, satellite map views, and priority software updates.
