Recent leak suggests that the next Studio Display will feature ProMotion, HDR support, and A19 chip

Earlier this week, MacWorld leaked some internal code that references Apple’s upcoming devices. The first of which was the next-generation base iPad with the A19 chip and the iPad Air with the M4 chip. Now, the same source reveals even more details about the long-awaited update to the Studio Display.

As you may know, the Studio Display was introduced alongside the Mac Studio back in March 2022, and that first-party monitor has become the ideal companion to any Mac or iPad Air/Pro. As the Studio Display is in its first generation, many customers have been longing for an upgrade. Thankfully, it looks like the next update is going to be even bigger.

First of all, the internal code that MacWorld discovered points to an unreleased external display identified as “J527,” which likely refers to the next-generation Studio Display. Furthermore, the code indicates that this upcoming product will support ProMotion and both SDR/HDR modes, which suggests that the next Studio Display will adopt mini-LED technology in place of LCD. In contrast, the current Studio Display’s refresh rate can go up to 60Hz and only supports SDR. So this next Studio Display would finally be in line with the latest MacBook Pro’s display technology.

Additionally, the code suggests that the next Studio Display will feature the A19 chip, which is the latest-generation chip that’s used on the standard iPhone 17. The current Studio Display features the A13 chip, so we should see improved display performance thanks to the improvements in the Display Engine in the A19 chip. The benefits of Apple Silicon allow the Studio Display to integrate seamlessly with Mac models.

It’s unclear whether these new features would increase the starting price; however, these features would make the Studio Display worth paying for, especially with all the amazing, existing built-in features, including the Center Stage camera, triple studio-quality mic array, and six-speaker setup. The Studio Display is the ideal companion for your Mac and iPad Air/Pro, especially for the Mac mini/Studio. I strongly believe this next Studio Display is worth waiting for, especially for content creators who have been working with HDR content. This upcoming Studio Display should be released sometime next year, possibly alongside either the M5 Pro/Max MacBook Pro models or the M5 family of Mac mini/Studio.
