Apple Silicon team’s latest innovation, the Apple A14 Bionic, which made its debut in the iPad Air [4th Generation] last month. During Apple’s annual September event. It has allegedly been benchmarked on the popular synthetic benchmark platform, Geekbench 5. This leak comes ahead of Apple shipping the new iPads to customers. Apple said that it will start shipping the iPad Air in “October” without providing a tentative date for the same.

The following benchmark was shared by on Twitter by “IceUniverse“, an active Twitter user with a good track record related Apple as well as Samsung leaks. The benchmark which is a screenshot states the iPad’s name as iPad 13,2 which is an unreleased model and seemingly corresponds to the iPad Air. It also has a model number J308AP which further supports this speculation and uploaded by “L0vetodream“. J308AP is the iPad Air with cellular, and J307AP is the ”ŒiPad”Œ Air 4 with Wi-Fi only, courtesy of MacRumours.

The iPad with Apple A14 mentioned in the screenshot scored a 1583 in single core performance, which is significantly higher than the older A12Z’s 1118 in the 2020 iPad Pro and the previous flagship mobile chip, the A13 Bionic. A13 Bionic scored a 1336 in the same single core benchmark. This leak suggests upto a 40% increase in single core performance when compared against the previous iPad Air. Looking at the multi core performance we see that it scored a 4198 with its 6 core CPU which consists of 2 High Power and 4 High Efficiency cores. While this is definitely an upgrade from the year old A13’s 3569, it is no match for the A12Z and the older A12X with their 8 core CPUs. Both of the X and Z versions of the A12 scored a 4564.

This benchmark however to be taken with a grain of salt. While believable, anything pre-released is always not a final version of that product. This however is significant to predict the future of Apple’s chipsets.

The Future

We know that Apple is moving to their own silicon for Macs. This means that the upcoming Macs will incorporate chipsets which will be based on the A14 Bionic. If we compare the raw performance of the A14 to an entry level MacBook Air which runs at 100°C almost all the time, we see that A14 whilst being an iPhone chipset easily outperforms the MacBook Air. If this chip is scaled to even bigger footprints, we can conclude that Apple Silicon Macs will be significantly faster, more power efficient and run cooler than their Intel counterparts.

No one really knows what Apple has up their sleeve, but we do know that Apple makes really fast processors and that they do it well. If this benchmark is anything to go by, it’s easily possible that the future of Macs and Apple is looking bright.

This same chipset will also be found in the upcoming iPhone dubbed the iPhone 12 by reputed leakers.

Transition to ARM based processors will also bring a whole new set of features which we covered here. It is also expected to run cooler and be cheaper than the current offerings by Apple. You can read about Apple Silicon here. To know more about the Apple A14 Bionic click here.
