According to a new report from Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, Apple may be preparing to launch new, smaller and lighter Gallium-nitride-based USB-C chargers for their devices. Here’s everything you need to know.

DigiTimes reports that Apple’s chip partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing has established a relationship with Navitas, the inventors of GaNFast, to produce GaN-on-Si chips ranging from 65 W to 100 W. Navitas are expected to obtain orders from Apple and other vendors in 2021, with TSMC to supply GaN-on-Si chips,” says the report.

GaNFast is a relatively new charging technology that leverages Gallium Nitride to provide fast, energy-efficient, and less heat-conductive charging. The result is a safer, smaller, and much lighter charger that provides more performance-per-watt than non-GaN silicon chargers.

It’s unclear if we will see GaN-based Apple chargers this year or if Apple will bring back the charger inside Apple Watch and iPhone boxes.
