In iOS 14.4 a new genuine part verification check has been introduced for iPhone 12 models.
The notification appears when the camera module is unable to be verified as new or genuine.
A support document has been posted that highlights the importance of certified and genuine repairs, and what issues could arise when a non genuine part is used.
Apple recommends the device be repaired by an offical or certified technician as the device may not function as expected and/or issues with image quality and features.
Below is a list of possible issues caused by a camera replacement:
- Camera does not focus correctly or images are not sharp
- When using Portrait mode, the subject might not be in focus or only partially in focus
- A 3rd-party app that uses the camera might freeze or quit unexpectedly
- Real-time preview in 3rd-party apps might appear blank or might get stuck
If a repair is performed and the module cannot be verified, users will see a warning under Settings > General > About that says “Unable to verify this ”ŒiPhone”Œ has a genuine Apple camera.”
Australian YouTuber Hugh Jeffreys shared an image on Instagram after updating to iOS 14.4 on an iPhone 12 with an official camera module from another iPhone 12 in the device shows the following message, which you can see below.
