After its acquisition of Day One back in June, the parent of WordPress & Tumblr Automattic has announced that it had bought popular podcasts app Pocket Casts.
Automattic has stated in a blog post today that the app has joined its family and that cofounders Russell Ivanovic and Philip Simpson will continue to lead the app:
We’re excited to announce that Pocket Casts will be joining Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com
As part of Automattic, Pocket Casts will continue to provide you with the features needed to enjoy your favorite podcasts (or find something new). We will explore building deep integrations with WordPress.com and Pocket Casts, making it easier to distribute and listen to podcasts. We’re thrilled that we can continue to give our users a multitude of ways to tell and engage with stories that matter.
Cofounders Russell Ivanovic and Philip Simpson will continue to lead Pocket Casts as part of Automattic.Â
Pocket Casts is one of the most popular podcast apps on both iOS and Android, mainly due to the seamless cross-platform integration.
In 2019 Pocket Casts became a freemium app by making the app free and introducing a new subscription service called Pocket Casts Plus ”“ the service provided extra features like exclusive app icons, a desktop app, and 10GB of cloud storage with the cost of $0.99/mo or $10/year.
