It has been a bit over a week since the new year started, and Apple is in the middle of an ongoing transition from Intel processors to Apple Silicon for the Mac lineup. Now, we’re getting some news that a Mac Pro with Apple Silicon could finally come this spring.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been developing a new generation of Mac Pro that runs macOS 13.3. We had macOS 11.3 and macOS 12.3 released in April 2021 and March 2022, respectively. Therefore, the timing would make sense for Apple to introduce the said model. While it could be unprecedented for Apple to introduce the Mac Pro earlier than the usual summer timeframe, Apple could put more of its energy into teasing its highly-anticipated virtual reality headset for this year’s WWDC.

The upcoming Mac Pro is expected to feature the M2 Ultra, and although the Mac Pro would retain the same design as the Intel-based counterpart, the main highlight feature for this computer would be expandability on all of its components except for the user-upgradable RAM. This will be similar to how the original Mac Pro replaced the Power Mac G5. Although the Intel processors that the original Mac Pro offered weren’t as powerful as the G5, Apple emphasized that customers could customize the Mac Pro to their hearts’ content by configuring the machine to the specs they would need.

With the introduction of the upcoming Mac Pro, Apple would officially complete the transition to Apple Silicon. However, it’s still likely that Apple will still offer Intel-based Mac mini and Mac Pro options for customers who still need an Intel Mac for various reasons such as Boot Camp support.
