Gurman: AirPods Could Be Your Next Health Tool

Avatar for Nick Soong

AirPods have been a mainstream accessory for Apple users for years, and Apple has the strongest lineup of AirPods yet – AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. While we’ve seen some amazing capabilities that AirPods have to offer, according to Mark Gurman’s weekly “Powered On” newsletter, he believes that Apple will transform the AirPods to become your next health tool alongside the Apple Watch.

Over the past few years, AirPods have offered hearing-focused features such as Live Listen and Conversation Boost; however, it’s worth noting that those features aren’t FDA approved or designed to officially replace hearing aids. Apple clearly has been focused on improving its users’ health through the tight integration between iPhone and Apple Watch with several medication sessions and workouts offered through Fitness+.

There have been several patent filings that indicate what the future of AirPods could look like including integrated biometric sensors similar to those found on the Apple Watch. Even Apple’s vice president of technology, Kevin Lynch, hinted that AirPods could be the next source of additional health data.

We have yet to see another update for any of the AirPods models, but we could see the second-generation AirPods Max and a low-cost “AirPods SE” within the next year or so.
