iPhone SE (4th generation) rumored to launch early next year with major spec upgrades

The current generation of the iPhone SE was introduced back in March 2022. Since Apple’s budget smartphone has gone without an update for over two years, it’s certainly overdue for the company to revamp the phone, especially when it’s starting to get long in the tooth, and thus providing a terrible value for a budget phone. Thanks to leaker “Ice Universe”, we’ve got even more details that we’ll more likely see on the next iteration of the iPhone SE, and it’s shaping up to be the biggest leap for the iPhone SE since the original model as it will inherit many of the core features the higher-end iPhones have had for years.

First, the display will finally get upgraded from the 4.7-inch LCD panel to the 6.06-inch OLED panel; this will mark the first time the iPhone SE has an OLED display and thus, will finally make OLED displays standard across the entire iPhone lineup. Even the cheapest Android phones have had OLED displays for years, so it’s really about time for the SE to receive the same treatment.

Second, it will finally replace both Touch ID and the Lightning charging port with Face ID and the USB-C port, which will standardize those technologies across all iPhone models in the lineup.

Finally, it will feature an A18 chip similar to the upcoming iPhone 16 models, and it will look largely identical to the iPhone 16, except that it will feature only a single rear 48MP camera as opposed to the dual camera system on the iPhone 16. Since the SE 4 will have the A18 chip with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, we could also see Apple Intelligence make its way to that phone.

The iPhone SE (4th generation) is expected to be announced in the spring of 2025. This would make sense since Apple previously introduced the iPhone 13 with an A15 chip back in September 2021, and the iPhone SE 3 with the same chip launched several months later in March 2022. This would avoid cannibalization of the higher-end and mainstream iPhone models. The starting price for the SE 4 is also expected to be between $499 and $549.
